“The mic was officially open!” At about 6:30ish we were nearly out of chairs and not one of my photos could capture all of that. There are so many people to thank for helping make our first poetry slam competition a big success. They know who they are and I think they had as good of a time as everyone else, just see the photos! Our DJ was awesome, Justis, the judges, the score keepers, the MC Mr. Ryan Parker, the contestants, our prize givers LTM, The Arbor’s, Cinemark, and Jerry’s Artorama.
Last night took what happens on our open mic night to a whole other level. The music had everyone dancing during breaks and not just individual, but groups all choreographed like! I hope someone nabbed a video of that. Our judges wore silly hats, and were cheered and booed for their decisions, which they held up on white boards.
The contestants were judged and awarded points 1-5 and the judges could use fractions of points to avoid ties, but guess what? We had a tie! Kaitlin Maloney and Brianna Rogers had to face off in a sudden-death challenge, which meant putting together a poem using loose words on tables in front of them. The one who delivered the best poem out of using those words would win Slam Queen and first prize! What a nail-biter!
Our next Open Mic event is October 15th. Everyone is welcome to present, but there is no competition. We want to encourage everyone, not just the ones who wish to take spoken word to the next level.
Our next slam competition will most likely be in October, but we have not yet set a date.
