SLAM COMPETITION REGS
SLAM competitors will battle it out in two rounds and will be judged by the greatest spoken word judges on earth who obviously know everything about poetry! Judging will be based on the following:
- CONTENT (message, feeling, thoughts).
- DELIVERY (volume, intonation, eye-contact, clarity)
- OVERALL PERFORMANCE (overall verbal and physical expression)
Peep the SLAM deets!
SLAM competitors will face off in an initial round, performing original poems, not to exceed three minutes. The top five poets from this initial round will advance to round two where they will battle each other by spitting their strongest poem piece. The poems performed in round two are not to exceed four minutes and will be the final performance poem for each contestant in the SLAM.
At the conclusion of this round, everyone will go bonkers and we will crack the ceiling with our cheering for all of the competitors!!! We will then announce first, second and third place winners and finalize the competition by crowning and awarding the first place winner in Young@Art’s very first Write Out Loud Open-Mic Series SLAM Competition!!!
Competing performers will be scored based on the following 3 elements: CONTENT, DELIVERY and OVERALL PERFORMANCE. Each element will be scored on a 1-5 scale (ONE POINT meaning: you really need to go home and practice waaaaayyyyyyy more before you ever show your face at a SLAM again and FIVE POINTS meaning: You are the absolute greatest poet to ever grace a mic and we are all willing to name our future children after you in honor of your poetic talent alone).
The most a competitor can score in a single round is 15 points and the lowest is 3. Half point scoring will be permitted in order to eliminate excessive ties. Competitors will be penalized a half of a point for every second they exceed the time limitation in each round.
As many of you already know, the Write Out Loud Open Mic Series is a place where we celebrate peace, love, poems, positivity, expression and creativity. Poor sportsmanship will result in immediate disqualification. Poems do not have to be memorized but tend to give you an advantage if they are.
What are you waiting for? Grab your pens and pads and get your poem on! Let’s SLAM!!!!
