I am very excited to introduce 2 new programs into the Young At Art CT family. Last fall, we had a poetry night that had some really dark, heavy poetry that actually concerned a few of us. It sparked conversations about when we should confront a poet to make sure they were all right. I was sitting with one of our board members, Judy Grote, and I mentioned to her that we should have a program to help develop stronger self-images and self-esteem through the arts. At that time, I was primarily thinking for young women especially, since that was where the poetry was coming from.
I met Melanie Brown 2 weeks later and was introduced by Ryan Parker. She asked if there was some way to be involved? Funny thing how it works, so I told her my idea and she told me that her friend Jackie and herself were thinking the same kind of thing, but didn’t know how to get started? Let’s set up a meeting!
Months went by before we had that meeting, but out of that meeting came these wonderful programs. I have challenged both Melanie and Jackie and they have overcome some hurdles to get to this point. We welcome everyone to the D.ART.S programs, which stand for “discoveries and art solutions.”
These won’t be your everyday after-school programs. These programs are designed to stretch a young creative person’s mind. Each program is very different, but they are extremely focused on each individual, or group. Register a 15- to 19-year-old and I bet they get an awful lot out of it! READ ALL ABOUT D.ART.S here!
Thank you, Melanie and Jackie! Also, a thank-you to the Town of Manchester for the mini-grant that will help get these programs kicked off!
