“Mural Madness” is a first-time event, produced by, and for the benefit of, Young @ Art CT (Y@A), a non-profit organization. It is a family friendly, one-day, outdoor live, mural painting competition that is open for the public to view the real-time works in progress with a $1,000 minimum First Prize winner.
AGENDA
Day of: 7:00 am – Park opens for registration, loading in and setting up
8:00 am – Official mural production begins
10:00 am – Grounds open to the public

5:00 pm – Award announcement
ELIGIBILITY, ARTISTS & TEAMS: Individual artists or teams may apply (referred to as “Muralists”). A Team may consist of a maximum of 4 artists and is considered one “Muralist”. The competition is open to all art genres and styles. Individual Muralists must be 18 years or older but teams may include participants 16 years up with one participant over age 18. Space is limited and no more than 50 Muralists will be accepted.
REGISTRATION: Register online by clicking here. Or email Cynthia@youngatartct.org for a hard copy or electronic form. Deadline to apply is TBD. Please provide four samples of your and/or your team members’ work by email upon application as well as a bio/artist statement of the team leader.
JURYING: The Y@A team will review applications and sample images promptly. Applicants will be notified by email of their acceptance and mailed an Acceptance Kit. Acceptances will have until TBD to confirm participation. Y@A does not require muralists to submit their design prior to the day of the event.
FEE: There is no fee to apply but each Individual or Team of Muralists accepted must pay a fee of $250. Fees do NOT need to be paid at the time of application. Muralists may consider securing sponsorships through friends, supporters, relatives, retail businesses and other opportunities. An envelope to record your “donations” will be provided in your Kit. Payments must be received by TBD to reserve your wall. Payment may be made by cash, check (payable to Young @ Art CT) or Paypal.
MURALS: Free-standing, temporary walls with framework and panels will be erected by Y@A. The image area will measure 12 feet wide by 8 feet high (landscape format), made up of three 4’x8’ sheets of Omega bond material (ValueBond Light) 1/8” thick. They will be mounted approximately 6 inches from the ground and secured against toppling or wind. The surface is white and has a smooth, semi-gloss feel. You will receive a sample of the material in your Acceptance Kit. (Kits available in January of 2017.)
CONTENT GUIDELINES: Mural designs must be original and executed by the Muralists. No copyrighted images, vulgarity, nudity, advertising, political statements, profanity, violence, gang-related references and no content offensive to any age, race or creed are allowed. Lettering is permitted as well as tangible elements, backgrounds, characters, people, places and things. The image must use the whole canvas.
DRAFT: Muralists are required to submit a draft of their design at Registration the day of the event.
ART SUPPLIES: Muralists are responsible for their own supplies including paint, brushes, containers for mixing paint etc. All paints are acceptable including spray paint, aerosol, latex, house paint, acrylic, markers, ink, poster paint etc. (*See EXHIBIT.) Other two dimensional mixed-media materials are allowed such as paper, stamps, glitter but the surface should remain fairly flat. We are seeking art supply donations such as different varieties of primary colors. Muralists will be advised of availability two weeks before the event.
OTHER SUPPLIES: Muralists should be self-sufficient and are responsible for step ladders or means of reaching the top of the mural, tables, chairs and other art and personal needs. Face masks will be available. At this time, no electricity or water will be available.
*EXHIBIT FOLLOWING MURAL MADNESS: Murals will be on display in the park for two weeks following the event and will be exposed to the elements. Keep this in mind when choosing your medium. Clear coat can be applied after Production Stops and judging is complete. (We are seeking donations of clear coat.)
JUDGING: A minimum of three qualified judges appointed by Y@A will be onsite throughout the day. Artwork will be judged on originality, design, theme and content, and technique. Judges decisions are final.
PRIZES & GIFTS: A minimum $1,000 1st Place Prize will be awarded as well as 2nd and 3rd Place cash prizes, People’s Choice and other categories. Additional merchandise, media attention, exhibits and benefits will be announced. Every Muralist will receive a gift of merchandise and/or gift certificates.
AGREEMENTS:
– By applying and submitting samples, the Muralist agrees that Y@A has the right to display, copy, distribute and use the images as it sees fit without any form of compensation. Credit will be given when possible.
– Only the accepted Muralists are permitted to participate in the hands-on production of the mural. If a Muralist team member is unable to participate, another artist may be substituted. Advance notice preferred.
– Travel and accommodations are the responsibility of Muralists unless other arrangements have been made.
– Muralists are required to remain in the Park for a reasonable portion of the day even if the mural is finished to talk to the public, media and to be present for the award announcements.
– Muralists will respect the park grounds and leave their stations clean at the end of the day.
– Y@A reserves the right to cancel, suspend and/or modify the competition, disqualify or refuse any applicant.
– At the end of production, murals become the property of Y@A. Murals may be shown in other exhibitions, public spaces and installations without compensation to the artist. If a mural is sold to benefit Y@A, the Muralist receives a portion of the sale.
